Following the success of the two previous events, I’m delighted to announce the return of the Practical Engineering Education Conference in 2024. I’m excited that the early planning indicates this instalment will be the most engaging and inspirational yet. In a time where there is increased industry demand for practical skills and universities face the challenge of accommodating larger student cohorts with leaner resources, this conference is relevant and timely. We are committed to elevating the importance of hands-on engineering within extensive educational frameworks. This event strengthens the movement and will fortify our presence in these networks.

Confirmed Keynote Speakers:

Professor Claire Lucas: Revolutionising Engineering Pedagogy

We are delighted to welcome Professor Claire Lucas, Professor of Engineering Teaching and Learning at King’s College London, as one of our esteemed keynote speakers at PEE24. With her extensive experience in engineering education research and implementation, Professor Lucas brings a wealth of knowledge to the conference.

About Professor Claire Lucas

As the Deputy Head of Department (Education) in the Department of Engineering at King’s College London, Professor Lucas leads pioneering research in engineering education. Her work focuses on reimagining General Engineering as a multi-disciplinary approach that emphasises domains over traditional disciplines. She is dedicated to transforming pedagogy to foster transversal skill development and promote ways of thinking and becoming, rather than just ways of knowing and doing.

Professor Lucas is recognized as a Fellow of the IMechE and a Senior Fellow in Higher Education. She has contributed significantly to academic accreditation processes and has been named one of the top 50 women in Engineering for her groundbreaking work in Engineering Education.

Keynote Address: Developing a Practical Pedagogy for Engineering

In her keynote address, Professor Lucas will challenge the traditional learning model that prioritises knowledge and understanding over practical and creative skills. Drawing from her experience at King’s College London, she will explore alternative pedagogies that support practical and experiential learning, emphasising the importance of a create-first approach.

Professor Lucas will discuss how identifying non-functional learning outcomes can enrich the educational journey for engineering students, fostering a deeper understanding of the skills and competencies they develop. Furthermore, she will delve into the emerging frameworks for measuring and assessing student behaviour as markers of skill and competency development.

Dr. Brett A. Becker: Exploring the Impact of Generative AI in Engineering Education

We are thrilled to announce Dr. Brett A. Becker, Assistant Professor at the School of Computer Science, University College Dublin, as one of our distinguished keynote speakers at PEE24. With over 17 years of experience in computing education research and lecturing, Dr. Becker brings a wealth of expertise to the conference.

About Dr. Brett A. Becker

Dr. Becker's journey in computer science began at the undergraduate level, stemming from his background in Mechanical Engineering and Physics. His academic pursuits led him to complete an MSc in Computational Science, followed by a PhD in Heterogeneous Parallel Computing. Additionally, he holds an MA in Higher Education.

As an Assistant Professor at University College Dublin, Dr. Becker's research focuses on computing education, particularly the psychology of programming, programming error messages, novice programmer behaviour, and the application of generative AI in education. He is actively involved in various professional organisations and committees, including serving as the Vice-Chair of the ACM Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education (SIGCSE).

Keynote Address: Generative AI in Engineering Education Practice

In his keynote address, Dr. Becker will explore the transformative potential of generative AI in engineering education. While generative AI has garnered attention for its impact on content generation and software engineering, its potential to revolutionise engineering education practices remains relatively untapped.

Dr. Becker will delve into the challenges and opportunities associated with leveraging generative AI as a catalyst for positive change in engineering education. By embracing this innovative technology, educators can better prepare
