DECADE (DEploying high CApacity DEnse small cell heterogeneous networks)

DECADE focuses on developing and optimising the deployment of small cells, to achieve an overall more efficient mobile network.

Using small cells to complement other efforts (e.g. increased spectrum efficiency, spectrum bandwidth expansion and traffic offloading through WiFi) has been regarded as one of the most promising ways to meet the use of broadband mobile service in both outdoor and indoor scenarios in the next decade.

Broadband mobile networks have been experiencing exponential traffic growth that will continue in the next five to ten years. It is predicted that a mobile operator’s network will carry 1000 times more traffic (mostly data) in 2022 than in 2012. A wide range of innovations are unsurprisingly needed, so that the mobile industry worldwide can continue to meet the rise of demands for data.

The DECADE project has been funded by the EU H2020 programme to develop some of the promising innovations. Along with two industrial partners, EEE (Dr Chu) is part of the DECADE academic-industry consortium led by The University of Linkoping.

Hence DECADE focuses on developing and optimising the deployment of small cells, to achieve an overall more efficient mobile network. Including small cells in the networks will lead to heterogeneous networks. Hence DECADE will also cover fundamental capacity analysis, system modelling, algorithm development and performance engineering for broadband mobile networks that are heterogeneous networks.

The DECADE project adopts the scheme of Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE), to facilitate inter-sectorial efforts and knowledge integration.
