Description |
For this series of concerts, director Silvester 'Mac' McElroy chose a variety of music. A Festival Prelude by Alfred Reed opened the concert followed by the national anthem. Next the band played Light Cavalry Overture by von Suppe (arr. by H. Fillmore). |
Mac then featured four of the band's trumpet players in David Rose's Holiday for Trumpets (originally Holiday for Strings arr. by Bullock). |
Following the trumpet quartet came Fantasy Jubiloso by Dan Court which featured Ken Bont on euphonium. |
Then Assistant Director Gene Smith took the podium to lead the band in Gustav Holst's First Suite in Eb for Military Band. |
The band finished up the first part of the program with Unter der Admirals Flagge by Austrian composer Julius Fucik, probably best known for his march Thunder and Blazes (also known as Entry of the Gladiators). |
After the intermission, the band played Harmony Heaven, a circus march by Barnhouse; Warren Barker's arrangement of a variety of George Gershwin songs entitled Gershwin; an original Barker composition entitled An Irish Ayre For Winds; Lucien Calliet's humorous variations on Pop! Goes the Weasel, another Barker arrangement of a medley of swing tunes called Swing's the Thing; and concluding with Sousa's Belle of Chicago march. The Watsonville Band acknowledges a standing ovation at the end of the concert, then treated the audience to Robinson's Grand Entry, a rousing circus march by Karl King, as an encore. |
Since there will be one more repeat of this concert and more information and pictures. Thanks to Chris Meharg, a Coach Operator for Monterey-Salinas Transit, for taking most of the pictures from this concert.
