The Watsonville Band, directed by Silvester 'Mac' McElroy, presented the second of the 2000 edition of its annual series of spring concerts. This time the band played in Carmel's lovely Sunset Theater. This concert marked the halfway point in the fifty-second of these spring concert series.

Description |
The Sunset Theater's interior seats about 800 but there isn't a bad seat in the house. Here a few band family members await the opening of the doors allowing the rest of the audience to enter and take their seats. |

Silvester 'Mac' McElroy succeeded Bert Viales as director of the Watsonville Band almost a year ago after teaching music in the Santa Cruz public schools for almost thirty years then at a private school for another nine. Prior to climbing the podium, he played French horn in the band. He has been kind enough to let Norm use his instrument in order to fill out the horn section. |
One of three assistant directors of the Watsonville Band, Gene Smith has been a member of the band for thirty-four years. He is a music educator in the nearby Pajaro schools and conducts the band in Gustav Holst's First Suite in Eb for Military Band in this series of concerts. |
The ages of the members of the Watsonville Band range from 13 to 91. The "elder statesman" of the band is Everett Mullins, pictured here in the midst of the trumpet/cornet section. |
Brenda, one of the band's flute players, spent some extra time decorating her fingernails om preparation for the concert. The designs are definitely appropriate. |
Brian Kane, a particularly enterprising member of the band, not only plays his instrument quite well, he even made it himself! Constructed of plastic and some valves and tubing from a sousaphone, it provides a unique aspect to the band. |
Since there will be two more repeats of this concert, more information on the program (and more pictures) will follow along with the additional website pages we will put up to document them.
