Civic Auditorium Sign

The Watsonville Band, based in Watsonville, CA, directed by Silvester 'Mac' McElroy, presented the first of the 2000 edition of its annual series of spring concerts. The auditorium of the Civic Auditorium in beautiful Santa Cruz, CA, provided the venue for this performance featuring this group of musicians ranging in age from 13 to 91. The remaining three concerts of this series will take place in Carmel, Salinas, and Watsonville over the next couple of weeks. More pictures from those concerts will be put up as the concerts take place.

Description

This first of the 2000 spring concert series took place in the beautiful Civic Auditorium in Santa Cruz. Admission was free (as are all of the concerts) and a good number of people came to enjoy the music.

Watsonville Band (small)

The Watsonville Band is one of the nation's oldest community bands. It has traveled to Europe several times, performed at the White House, and annually presents concerts throughout the Monterey Bay area.

A friend (using our camera) took the pictures of the band performing. Here he caught both of us playing a particularly fast passage (which is why it's a bit blurry!) in one of the numbers.

The Watsonville Band playing a Holst suite (small)

The Watsonville Band played a wide variety of music for this concert. One of the band's assistant conductors, Gene Smith, gave Mac a break while he led the band in Gustav Holst's 'First Suite in Eb' which was one of the more difficult and challenging pieces. Mac sat in the audience (slightly to the left) to enjoy the music.

Since there will be three more repeats of this concert, more information on the program (and more pictures) will follow along with the additional website pages we will put up to document them.
