The Houghton M. Roberts State Beach spans the borders of Monterey and Seaside along the Monterey Bay. Just off Highway 1 it is easily seen from the primary roadway in the area. Having passed it numerous times and watching the waves crash and people flying kites, we decided it would make a nice place to stop.

One of the primary attractions of this stretch of beach (for us, anyway) was the frequent flying of kites which we have observed while driving by on several occasions. When we arrived, there were but a few aloft. Here is one of them. |
We noticed on the sand what appeared to be a couple of very long, large kites. Upon closer inspection, however, we discovered that instead they were parachutes which apparently had been used earlier to land on the beach from points above. |
The main part of the city of Monterey lay just around the bend of the bay and presented itself as a very beautiful backdrop for the beach. |
Although the Pacific Ocean lived up to its name with a very peaceful, almost flat surface, the waves still washed ashore and provided a nice bit of surf action. |

Shortly before we left we caught a couple of folks with some small but colorful box kites. With a weak and variable breeze, kite flying proved rather difficult. Still, it was worth a try. |
